(3.5 hours)
The content of this session outlines the differences between life within
an orphanage and a family. This session highlights the impact of institutional
conditions on child development.

This session informs participants as to the process of attachment, examines

differentness. Practical suggestions are provided for discussing adoption
with children. Information is also presented as to the potential need
for and the selection of post-adoption services.
ADDITIONAL RESOURCES - PARENT HANDOUTS

the Attachment and Bonding Center (ABC) of Ohio, we place particular emphasis
on fostering the connection between adopted children and their parents.
By re-working the early life experiences that interfered with normal developmental
processes, we help the children let go of their anger, resentment, and
fear. With this release comes the freedom to experience closeness
and trust with others - resulting in a greater likelihood that they will
attach to their adoptive families. To achieve this end, we provide
a variety of services tailored to the specific issues of children with
attachment difficulties, as well as those whose lives are intertwined
with theirs:
- Family
and Child Assessment -- A detailed evaluation of each case to determine
the intensity level of treatment. Attachment
Enhancement -- For children who are experiencing stress due to a change
in primary caregiver, adoption, foster care or severe medical condition.
Attachment
Therapy -- Treatment for attachment issues ranging from bi-weekly therapy
to a two-week intensive, with many options in between. Sibling
Assessment -- Assistance with the decision to place siblings together
or separately. Pre-Adoptive
Counseling -- For parents who are considering adoption, provided is
identification and review of a diversity of issues that are present
in any adoption. Post-Placement
Services -- Created for those who have adopted both domestically and
internationally, this service aids in family integration.
- Birth

and difficult information with their adopted children.
